The national obsession with fitness has created a multi-billion dollar exercise equipment
industry.  Many people would rather purchase their own home gym equipment than a
gym membership, and they are willing to invest thousands of dollars to do so.  There
are certainly advantages to having your own training machines ready and waiting in
your own home.  There are also disadvantages that may not be obvious until the
equipment has been purchased.

Bowflex is one of the industry leaders in the home fitness field.  The Nautilus company
has been selling strength training equipment since 1986 when they marketed their first
resistance-based Bowflex machine.  They have improved on their original model, but
the basic premise remains the same.  Bowflex machines work the muscles by providing
resistance through a series of polymer rods.

Bowflex Xtreme is one of the newer home gyms offered by Nautilus.  This particular
Bowflex model has 65 different exercises.  There are four position adjustable pullies
built into the system.  It offers as little as 5 pounds or up to 210 pounds of weight
resistance.  Customers can purchase additional Power Rods to gain as much as 410
pounds of resistance.

The Bowflex Xtreme gives trainers a gym-style vertical workout position, and it has an
X-shaped base for maximum stability.  It offers several different exercises that work
chest, shoulder, arm, abdominal, back and leg muscle groups.  And its compact design
makes for a perfect fit in smaller workout spaces.

As compact as it is, though, potential customers should take into consideration that
Bowflex machines do not fold for storage.  The Bowflex Xtreme needs about a 7' x 6'
space to stand permanently.  Price is another factor to consider.  This Bowflex model is
$1,299.00 plus shipping.  It's a price worth paying if the buyer is dedicated to working
out at home regularly.  The high price tag isn't worth it, though, if there's a chance it
might sit idle after the novelty wears off.

One more issue to think about is the effectiveness of the Bowflex Xtreme workouts.
Many users report positive results with regular Bowflex workouts.  Others, however, say
that the resistance rods aren't as effective as weights.  All Bowflex users agree that
working out with the Power Rods feels completely different from working out with weight
machines.  Some people like this change, and others never get used to it.

The Nautilus company is so sure that their customers will love the Bowflex Xtreme, they
offer a "6 Week Fitness Results Guarantee."  Unsatisfied customers can return the
product for a full refund, minus the shipping fees, if they call customer service within six
weeks of purchase.  There is also an unlimited warranty on the Power Rods and a
seven year limited warranty on the rest of the machine, which only covers defects in
materials or workmanship.
